A 49-year-old man was hit and killed as he tried to cross the Major Deegan Expy. near Yankee Stadium early Sunday morning, police said. Darnell Carter, a native of Melrose, was hit as he tried to cross the divider from the northbound lane to the southbound lane near exit 5 at 12:27 a.m., police said. Carter was hit by a Toyota Rav 4 that was heading South on the busy highway. The driver stayed on scene and there was no apparent criminality, police said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says a Metro-North passenger train derailment in New York City has left four people dead and 63 injured. Cuomo spoke Sunday morning at the scene of the crash in the Bronx. He says authorities believe everyone at the site has been accounted for and that the National Transportation Safety Board is en route. Cuomo says the train operator is among the injured. The crash was reported at 7:20 a.m. near the Spuyten Duyvil station. The southbound Hudson Line train from Poughkeepsie was headed to Grand Central Terminal.

One man died after being catapulted over a railing and three others were injured after a car crash on the Bruckner Expressway Sunday morning, police say. Abubakar Saleh, 47, was checking on a Toyota sedan that broke down on the near 138th Street when he and another man were hit by a Honda sedan traveling on the freeway, according to the NYPD. Saleh was sent over the railing onto another road below and was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. The 22-year-old man who was inspecting the car with Saleh was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
