Salt Lake City, UTIt was about 6:30pm when a van carrying Marshall P. Jack and many other male passengers was speeding and being pursued by a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer. The van eventually lost control and drove off of Highway 40, where it crashed and landed on its side. Jack lost his life in the accident, while three other men hospitalized with critical injuries. It is believed that alcohol contributed to the accident.

Soon Johnson lost control of the vehicle, it rolled over, and he was ejected onto the roadway, dying in the process. Details on the case that caused this chase were not available.
