Ronald D. Darnell was driving his car on Highway 69 when a pickup crossed the centerline and collided with him head-on. Darnell died at the scene. The driver of the pickup, Joel Brandon Neider, 39, was driving while impaired. Once he was released from a hospital in Phoenix, he was charged with manslaughter, seven counts of felony endangerment, three counts of DUI and felony criminal damage. Two bicyclists have been injured after being hit by a vehicle Saturday morning. One bicyclist is reported to be in critical condition. The driver of the car, arrested for using a suspended license, admitted that they were not paying attention when they hit the bicyclists. We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Fix, of Redmond, was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, then released from the hospital and taken into custody by Oregon State Police. He was booked into Deschutes County jail on suspicion of manslaughter in the first degree, assault in the second degree, drunken driving, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person.

Both people in the police SUV were seriously injured, though officials believe that the new safety features of the SUV likely saved the lives of Lamb and Jones. Prior to the accident, another driver had called 911, reporting that the driver of the car that struck the DPS vehicle, Deborah Jean St. Dennis, of Vail, Arizona, was driving erratically.
