Man killed in fiery pre-dawn crash identified

Authorities said car left the roadway, struck a tree, flipped and then burst into flames. It came to rest about 16 feet off of the road.

Authorities have identified a man killed early today in a fiery crash in western Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Christopher Shawn Spain. The 25-year-old man was from the Adamsville area, said Deputy Coroner Johnny Long.

Police and firefighters were called to New Mulga Loop Road off of Birmingport Road at 2:42 a.m. on a report of an accident. A passing motorist told authorities the car was on fire and it appeared the driver was trapped inside.

Authorities said car left the roadway, struck a tree, flipped and then burst into flames. It came to rest about 16 feet off of the road.

Firefighters put out the blaze and found the victim inside. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:50 a.m.

Authorities said the crash victim and the car were burned beyond recognition. They can't even tell what kind of car it is, and both the VIN and license plate number were heavily damaged by the flames.

Long said they were able to get a partial VIN number and trace the car back to its owner, which was Spain's mother. With her help, they obtained medical records and used X-rays to confirm Spain's
