1 dead after multi-vehicle crash on I-65 South in Hoover

Authorities said Arbaugh was entering onto I-65 from U.S. 31 when he lost control of his Mercedes and spun sideways in the southbound lane of traffic.

A 26-year-old man died early today after a multi-car crash Sunday night on an interstate in Hoover.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Derick Brian Arbaugh. Arbaugh lived in the Shoal Run area off of U.S. 280.

The crash happened at 6:24 p.m. on Interstate 65 southbound at U.S. 31. Authorities said Arbaugh was entering onto I-65 from U.S. 31 when he lost control of his Mercedes and spun sideways in the southbound lane of traffic.

An oncoming Nissan Pathfinder broadsided Arbaugh's sedan. Two other vehicles also were involved.

Arbaugh was taken to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. today.

The crash snarled traffic for several hours. By 10:15 p.m., all lanes were reopened near the Montgomery Highway exit.

Arbaugh's Facebook page shows he was just married several months ago in Germany, where authorities say his wife was when the crash happened. His parents live out of state, but were notified of his death.
