Lillian plane crash kills two, including 15-year-old
The bodies of two people, including a teenager, were found Wednesday in plane wreckage in a swamp here.
The victims have been identified as Dean Legidakes, 67, and Marli McManus, 15.
The Great Lakes 2T1 bi-plane that they were on went down in a deeply wooded swamp area about 1½ miles northeast of the Shields Airport in Lillian, Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Capt. Steve Arthur said.
Legidakes and McManus left Ferguson airfield in Pensacola, Fla., at about 10 a.m. Wednesday to go sightseeing, Arthur said.
"When the plane did not return from a sightseeing trip an alarm was sent to be on the lookout for the plane," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified at about 4 p.m. that the plane's wreckage had been found 15 miles west-southwest of the Pensacola Airport.
The wreckage was spotted from the air by a helicopter crew that was searching for the plane, Arthur said.
Deputies were called in to try to get to the plane wreckage in the swamp. The helicopter crew gave the deputies directions on where to go, but it was not easy getting to the plane, Arthur said.
