A U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed and a second was injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash near Benson on Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred about 7:40 a.m., and tire-tread separation was a contributing factor, said Raúl Garcia, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 10 about eight miles east of Benson when the agents crashed, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The agents, who were assigned to the Willcox station, were on duty at the time of the rollover, Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske, of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said in a news release.
Both agents were taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson — one in a Life Flight air ambulance, the other by ground ambulance.
The more seriously injured agent, a five-year veteran of the Border Patrol, died during the flight, Kerlikowske said.
Gov. Jan Brewer’s office identified Alexander Giannini as the agent who died in the crash.
The name and condition of the other agent were not released.
