A 44-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a serious-injury crash in northwest Phoenix, police said.

Police say Merino Carlo Lusterino was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Suburban that ran a red light at 51st Avenue and Bell Road and struck a Toyota Corolla with the right of way just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Sgt. James Holmes, a Phoenix police spokesman said that, moments before the collision, a motorcycle rider called to report that a Subarban had nearly run him off the road near Bell Road and Interstate 17.

Phoenix dispatchers were about to broadcast the motorcyclist’s call when an off-duty Phoenix police officer saw a Suburban driving westbound on Bell Road at 43rd Avenue at an extremely high rate of speed, Holmes said.

A 32-year-old man who was driving the Corolla remaind in the hospital in critical condition on Wednesday.

Lusterino, who was also injured in the crash, was arrested upon being released from a hospital and booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault causing injury, Holmes said.

Phoenix police said they believe alcohol may have been a factor and are awaiting toxicology results for confirmation.
