The driver of a stolen pickup truck that collided with a van carrying a pregnant woman faces second-degree murder and seven other felony charges after the woman's unborn child died early Thursday morning.

Michael Angelo DeLaCruz, 29, of Phoenix, was chased down by Phoenix police after he tried to run and steal another vehicle after the crash to escape, according to a Phoenix police officer's statement.

The expectant mother, who was 27 weeks pregnant, had to undergo emergency surgery and the child died of complications, the officer said.

Phoenix police said DeLaCruz crossed over the center lanes and struck the van carrying the two women head-on at Ninth Avenue and McDowell Road.

The driver of the van suffered a broken leg and was taken to a hospital.

DeLaCruz and a woman in the truck ran and tried to steal a BMW sedan before DeLaCruz fled, leaving the woman at the house, police said. The homeowner called police and the woman was captured. She later identified DeLaCruz, the officer said.

DeLaCruz was captured a short distance away and was taken to a hospital for treatment, the officer said.

Once he was released by the hospital, DeLaCruz again tried to escape the officers and had to be physically restrained.

He told police he had been using methamphetamines all day and ran because he was on parole and had a felony warrant out for his arrest, the officer said.

He was booked into jail for second-degree murder, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury, aggravated assault, escape and vehicle.
