Neither alcohol nor mechanical problems appear to be factors in a big rig crash that killed a 49-year-old mother and injured her 9-year-old daughter as they walked to school Tuesday morning at a Hollywood intersection, police said.

A mother who was struck by a driver as she walked her daughter to school in Hollywood has died, according to police.

A mother, later identified as Marleni Edith Barrera, 42, who was struck by a driver as she walked her daughter to school in Hollywood has died, according to police.

The family members were in a crosswalk Tuesday morning when they were struck by the driver at the intersection of Fountain Avenue and Bronson Avenue near Joseph Le Conte Middle School. The mother was pronounced dead late Tuesday morning.

The child remains hospitalized, but details regarding her condition were not immediately available. Officials at Joseph Le Conte Junior High School stated that the child is a student at a nearby charter school.

The driver did not leave the scene, according to initial reports from police.
