Off-duty LAPD officer killed in Torrance motorcycle crash

In the crash, Alcaraz’s personal motorcycle — not an LAPD vehicle — hit the side of a car at an intersection, a Torrance police official said. “The driver of the car was about to turn northbound on Western (from 234th Street) and the motorcyclist was southbound on Western,’’ Torrance police Lt. Brian O’Steen said. Alcaraz’s motorcycle hit the side of the car and he died at the scene, O’Steen said. The driver of the involved vehicle was not injured and was not taken to a hospital, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Off-duty LAPD officer killed in Torrance motorcycle crash identified

The former Marine Corps veteran was driving his own private motorcycle southbound on Western Avenue just before 5 p.m. Saturday when the driver of a 2013 Kia Optima turned left from West 234th Street onto South Western and collided into him, according to a preliminary account from the Torrance Police Department.
According to Los Angeles police officials, Alcaraz, a Marine Corps veteran, had been a patrol officer for 18 months. He had just finished his one-year probationary period at the Southwest Community Police Station on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and Sunday would have been his first day assigned to the West Los Angeles area. LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a statement, “The entire LAPD is grieving the loss of a young officer killed in an off-duty traffic collision. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and co-workers of this fine officer during this difficult time.”
