At approximately 7:20 p.m. Friday, authorities received a report about a car crash on Highway 86 near mile post 6, a Colorado State Patrol trooper stated.

Vernon Liggett, 51, of Castle Rock was driving westbound in an eastbound lane without his headlights on Highway 86 in a 1995 Plymouth Neon.

The Neon crashed head-on with a 2014 Chevy pickup truck in the eastbound lane. A 70-year-old man from Franktown was driving the Chevy.

Police said the two vehicles rotated to block both lanes of traffic, which caused the highway to be shut down until 11 p.m.

Liggett was declared dead on the scene, according to Lewis, and the 70-year-old man was taken to Parker Adventist Hospital with serious injuries.

Both parties wore seat belts.

Police said alcohol may have contributed to the accident, but will wait for the coroner to confirm when the autopsy is complete.
