A small plane carrying a family of four from the Front Range crashed north of Rifle Friday night. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said two adults and two children on board died.

The family was flying from Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport to Moab, Utah, when the plane went down about 10 miles north of Glenwood Springs, according to a family member who is a FOX31 employee.

The National Transportation Safety Board says Jeff Makepeace, 47, and his family were flying through conditions that included gusty winds and low visibility when their single-engine propeller plane crashed in mountainous terrain near Glenwood Springs the night of Sept. 15.
Hundreds expected at Friday services for family killed in plane crash near Garfield County
Services for the family will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Timberline Church in Fort Collins. A reception will follow at the church. The services are open to the public

This is of course incredibly
This is of course incredibly sad. According to most any experienced pilot, this is a tragedy that should not have occurred. Flying a small plane in mountainous terrain at night is completely contrary to what is taught in every mountain flying course that I've ever taken or heard of. I'm afraid it isn't going to take the NTSB very long to piece this together, even if they don't release the report for months.
