One dead after traffic accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a single vehicle accident with a fatality in Citrus County.

At about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, a 2000 Jeep Cherokee collided with a tree near the intersection of West Roosevelt Boulevard and North Chickasaw Way.

The SUV driven by Verna Mae Vanwingen, 82, of Beverly Hills, was headed eastbound on West Roosevelt Boulevard at North Chickasaw Way at the time of the accident, a Florida Highway Patrol news release stated. For unknown reasons, the Jeep Cherokee left the road, traveled onto the center median and slammed into a tree.

Vanwingen and another passenger, Thomas James Vanwingen, 53, also of Beverly Hills, were taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital, where the female driver later died of her injuries, the release stated. Thomas James Vanwingen were treated for minor injuries.
