A pedestrian was killed Sunday after walking into the path of a minivan traveling on U.S. 41 in Port Charlotte, authorities said.

A pedestrian was killed Sunday after walking into the path of a minivan traveling on U.S. 41 in Port Charlotte, authorities said.

The name of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident unfolded around 8 p.m., at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Conway Boulevard, an FHP press release noted. The minivan, a 2004 Nissan Quest, was traveling south and approaching the intersection, with a steady green traffic light.

The victim was pushing a bicycle through the intersection, and had crossed the northbound traffic lanes, but then stepped into the path of the Quest, troopers reported. The driver of the van attempted to steer around the pedestrian, but was unable to avoid a collision.

The victim was transported to Bayfront Health Port Charlotte hospital, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

The 39-year-old driver of the van and a 13-year-old passenger were uninjured, according to reports
