The driver of a fuel tanker involved in a crash that snarled traffic along Interstate 75 in Sarasota County on August 27th has died. Thomas Leland Grattan, a 71-year-old Brooksville resident, passed away early Friday morning at Blake Medical Center. He had been a patient at the Bradenton medical facility since the crash. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Grattan's semi-truck was traveling south when it made a dramatic left turn into the median before veering into a ditch along the northbound lanes of the roadway.
The tanker spilled between 250 and 500 gallons of gasoline into the ditch, and around 20 emergency vehicles were sent to the site to remove fuel from the damaged tanker. A crane was brought in to remove the vehicle from the ditch. Four other vehicles were involved in the crash but no other injuries were reported. Grattan was airlifted by helicopter to hospital but died shortly after the crash.
