Viki Dearforff, 51, killed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while she was walking on the Piilani Highway near Kihei, Hawaii

A Maui woman was killed during an apparent hit-and-run accident late Tuesday night, according to Maui Police. An MPD spokesperson says Viki Dearforff, 51, of Kihei, was killed when she was struck by a Toyota truck while walking on Piilani Highway. Deardorff was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say that "following the collision the operator of the Toyota truck that struck Ms. Deardorff fled the scene failing to provide any assistance. The incident is believed to be the sixth fatality on Maui roads in less than two weeks. MAUIWatch reports the incident happened near the juncture of Piilani Highway and Mokulele Highway at around 11 p.m. Police say that the woman was thrown about 40 feet during the crash. Northbound lanes of Piilani Highway were closed during an investigation, but have since been reopened. So far in 2014, nine people have been killed on Maui roads, compared to just four at the same time last year.
