A former University of Kentucky men's basketball player has been identified as one of two people killed in a Monday night car crash in Louisville.
Kerry Benson, 24, was a walk-on at Kentucky in 2007. He left the team mid-way through the 2007-2008 season to focus on his education.
Benson was a Pleasure Ridge Park High School graduate, where he also played basketball.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the second victim as Germina Cruz, 23. She was dancer for the 2014 Lady Xtreme Dance Team.
Benson was the driver of a Ford Fusion headed east on Taylorsville Road near Bowman Field just after 10 p.m. Monday when he lost control of the car and slammed into a utility police near Betty Lane. Cruz was a passenger. A third person in the backseat of the car, Dominique Owens, was taken to University of Louisville hospital for treatment. She was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
A deputy coroner said Benson died of multiple blunt force injuries. Cruz died of extensive head injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash. They have not ruled out icy road conditions as a factor.
