Raymond Unland Jr. struck and killed while riding his bike near Covington.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said it is investigating the death of a 58-year-old triathlete who died Monday after being struck head-on by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle. The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Raymond Unland Jr. was riding on Riverland Drive in Tchefuncta Estates south of Covington when he was struck head-on by a Jeep Wrangler, authorities said. The Jeep was being driven by a 16-year-old boy. Citing the age of the driver, the Sheriff's Office did not release his name.
Unland, a dentist who lived in Tchefuncta Estates, was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington and then airlifted to University Hospital in New Orleans. He died there Monday.
Authorities could not say Tuesday whether Unland was wearing a helmet. In an email, however, his daughter, said safety was important to her father and that he was wearing a helmet.
The Sheriff's Office said the incident is still being investigated. Neither alcohol nor speed is believed to have played a role in the crash, a spokesperson said. No citations have been issued at this time, according to the Sheriff's Office.
