A Franklin woman died Monday afternoon after she failed to yield at a stop sign on La. 182 at U.S. 90 and was struck broadside by a van.

Shirley Landry, 83, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office, said a State Police spokesman.

The crash occurred as Landry was driving south on La. 182 in her 2000 Dodge Stratus and stopped at a stop sign on U.S. 90, police said.

When she drove forward to cross U.S. 90, she was struck by a westbound 2011 Toyota van driven by Kelly Shepard, 42, of Tomball, Texas.

The collision pushed both vehicles into the median, police said.

Shepard and his passenger were both wearing their seat belts and sustained minor injuries, police said. Landry also was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

Troopers do not know if alcohol was a factor in the crash, but toxicology samples were submitted to the State Crime Lab for analysis, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
