Eunice motorcyclist critically injured in New Iberia wreck

Darrel Toepfer, 54 of Eunice, was wearing a helmet, but not one not certified by the Department of Transportation, and sustained head injuries in the crash, Sheriff Louis Ackal said in a press release.

A motorcyclist was critically injured after crashing into a car that pulled into its path on Thursday morning in New Iberia, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office announced.

Darrel Toepfer, 54 of Eunice, was wearing a helmet, but not one not certified by the Department of Transportation, and sustained head injuries in the crash, Sheriff Louis Ackal said in a press release. He was taken to a Lafayette hospital.

The accident occurred before 7:30 a.m., when Betty Walker, 62 of New Iberia, traveling south on Center Street turned left toward a private drive and into the path of Toepfer’s 2007 Suzuki motorcycle.

Walker, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. She was cited for failure to yield, the press release said.
