Michaela Lewis 17, injured, taken to hospital, after wrong-way DUI driver crashes into her car.
Wrong-way driver causes crash; jailed.
A man is in jail and a teenager is in a hospital following a chain-reaction crash in Ionia County. It happened around 4:18 p.m. Wednesday in front of the Admiral gas station near M-66 and E. Tuttle Road south of Ionia. A 38-year-old man was speeding southbound in the northbound lanes, crossed the center line, entered the intersection on a red traffic light, and collided with another vehicle, police said. Michaela Lewis, 17, from Saranac was driving the other vehicle and beginning to turn left from Tuttle Road to M-66. The impact caused her vehicle to go airborne as it spun around before impacting a northbound vehicle stopped at the traffic light, according to a news release. The at-fault vehicle left the road, struck a street sign and ended in a ditch. The 38-year-old from Carson City was arrested on suspicion of operating under the influence of drugs and driving on a suspended license. Michaela was transported to a hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries. All of the drivers were wearing their seat belts, and the air bag deployed in the at-fault driver’s vehicle.
