Search to resume Sunday for missing boater in Gates County

Crews plan to resume their search of the Chowan River in Gates County after a boat accident Saturday. Gates County Sheriff Ed Webb told WAVY.com emergency responders received a call about a boat that sank around 3 p.m. It happened about a mile south of the state border
Crews plan to resume their search of the Chowan River in Gates County after a boat accident Saturday. Gates County Sheriff Ed Webb told WAVY.com emergency responders received a call about a boat that sank around 3 p.m. It happened about a mile south of the state border. Witnesses told responders a boat appeared to hit something the river, and then sank. Witnesses said two men on the boat were screaming for help, and tried to swim to shore but disappeared. A rescue boat being tested nearby responded, and helped locate the boat. It has not yet been recovered. Sheriff Webb said 67-year-old Ervin Curtis Hedgepeth’s body was recovered and identified. Crews are searching for 59-year-old Herman Wayne Greene, who is considered missing. Webb said crews plan to continue searching for Greene at 8 a.m. Sunday.
