Wounded driver dies after car crashes into Springfield Twp. home

"We think it was a targeted victim. It wasn't a random shooting and we'll see what our investigation turns up after that," Springfield Township Police Chief David Heimpold said.
A man is dead after police say he was shot in his car and tried to drive away but hit a house in Springfield Township. Officials said the car ran into a home in the 10000 block of Sprucehill Drive about 6 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the car's driver suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Officers identified the victim as Anthony Hinton, 27. As police examined the aftermath of the deadly shooting, one mother told WLWT News 5's Jackie Congedo that her 7-year-old son saw it all. "He and two other smaller boys were playing and they said they saw some guys with guns come out and they were just shooting. They didn't know what to do so they started running," she said. She said her son was playing down the street. She heard what she thought were fireworks. "We didn't think anything of it until the car hit the house and that's when we realized something serious was going on," she said. Police said Hinton was behind the wheel of an SUV on Birchridge Drive when two men approached his car and opened fire. Hinton drove a short distance before crashing into the house. "We think it was a targeted victim. It wasn't a random shooting and we'll see what our investigation turns up after that," Springfield Township Police Chief David Heimpold said. Hinton was transported to Mercy Fairfield Hospital in Butler County where he was later pronounced dead. Officials said because Hinton was pronounced dead in Butler County, the Butler County Coroner has investigators at the scene of the crash.
