A Catholic priest was among several who rushed to help a 63-year-old woman hit by an alleged drunk driver while she was doing yard work.

A full day of Easter had just wrapped up at St. James Catholic Church in Nutbush and Father Richard Cortese had just stepped foot into the rectory for dinner when a different type of service unexpectedly called.

"Our neighbor was in there on the side working in her yard. I waved at her," said Cortese. "I heard this screeching of wheels and BAM," said Cortese.

The victim was sweeping a sidewalk when a pickup hopped the curb and lost its left front wheel. The truck hit the woman and then kept on driving, scraping away and leaving a huge rut in the asphalt. Father Cortese ran to her aid.

"Thank God she was breathing, her eyes were open. She looked like she was in shock," added Cortese.

James Moon heard the aftermath and saw the pickup truck leave the scene on just three wheels.

"Just a messed up day, yesterday, on Easter," said Moon. "It's just crazy. You got fools flying through here in these little truck, hot rods flying through here."

Neighbors chased the pickup truck and alleged driver, 32-year-old Joshua Spencer. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and DUI after police say he blew a .189.

"Luckily she moved out of the way enough quick enough she didn't get run over. She would've been killed," said Cortese.

The victim went through a battery of tests on Monday and her husband says she is going to be okay.

Spencer is also charged with being a convicted sex offender who was not carrying proper identification.

Bond set at $15,000 and Spencer goes to court on Tuesday.
