The wreck occurred about 7:15 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the freeway near Wharton County Road 404, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Three inmates from the Texas Department Criminal Justice as well as two TDCJ sergeants were in the van, said spokesman Robert Hurst.

Hurst said all five people were taken to the hospital in El Campo. Details of their injuries and conditions were not released.

The inmates, Hurst said, were being transported from the Connally Unit in Kennedy to the Jester 4 Unit in Richmond when the crash occurred. Preliminary information indicates the sergeant driving the van may have had a heart attack, which led to the crash.
