Authorities identify first of five people killed in Sunday's crash

Carmona, who was driving a Dodge Ram 5500 east in the parkway's westbound lane, is scheduled to appear in 185th state District Court Thursday morning in connection with five counts of intoxication manslaughter filed against him in the incident.

Efraim Carmona pleaded guilty to five counts of intoxication manslaughter Wednesday in Houston and accepted a 50-year prison sentence, of which he must serve 25 years before becoming eligible for parole.

After a two-day investigation that produced few leads, Harris County investigators Wednesday identified the driver of a pickup who was killed along with four of his passengers late Sunday when their vehicle was stuck by another truck traveling the wrong way on the north Sam Houston Parkway. At the wheel of the Ford F-150 was Valentin Garcia, 41, said Harris County Sheriff's spokeswoman Christina Garza. The other victims, including a boy who appeared to have been about 3 years old, have not been identified. The lone survivor, an 11-year-old girl, was in extremely critical condition Wednesday at Memorial Hermann Hospital and not expected to live, officials said. Trisha Bentley, spokeswoman for the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, said authorities believe all the victims were members of Garcia's family. Early reports indicate the family was planning to move to Oklahoma, where another member of the family, an 18-year-old man, resides. The driver of the second vehicle, Efraim Carmona, 34, was listed in good condition at Ben Taub General Hospital.
