How marriage equality helps accident victims

Since you are on the internet right now, it's probably not news to you that in a landmark descision today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 5-to-4 in favor of marriage equality. The ten thousand variations of rainbow motifs all over social media have surely clued you in to the fact that love is now the law of the land! What you might not know, though, is how marriage equality means that gay spouses will now be afforded rights that are very much important in the wake of an accident. While they're less sunshine and rainbows than, well, rainbows, they're extremely important. Here are a few of the benefits that will now be available to anyone who wants to get married: - visiting spouse in a hospital during restricted hours or in intensive care units (ICU) - consenting to after-death examinations and procedures - making burial or other final arrangements - ability to make financial/medical decisions on spouse’s behalf if they cannot - inheriting spouse’s estate - social security, medicare, disability benefits for spouse - veteran and military benefits extend to spouse - receiving family rates for health, homeowners', auto, and other types of insurance - insurance benefits extend to spouse - ability to take family leave to care for ill spouse - receiving wages/compensation/benefits for deceased spouse - court cannot force you to disclose confidential conversations between you and spouse - receiving crime victim recovery benefits if spouse is the victim of a crime - visiting rights if spouse is in jail or other places where visitors are restricted to immediate family - suing a third person for wrongful death of your spouse and loss of consortium (loss of intimacy).
