Recaro recalls 173,000 ProRIDE and PerformanceRIDE car seats

Another car seat manufacturer is recalling car seats thanks to a safety defect. In a letter to registered customers, Recaro Child Safety says that their ProRIDE and PerformanceRIDE car seats have a faulty restraint that may crack, allowing the top part of the tether to detach from the restraint in a collision. In a crash, the defect could cause the car seat to flop around, causing a child injury by slamming into objects in the car's interior instead of being strapped tight to the back seat.  The affected seat models were manufactured between April 9, 2010 and June 9, 2015:
Recaro will notify and send all registered owners a retrofit kit with instructions to further secure the child restraints. The kit will be provided free of charge. For owners who haven't registered their car seat (or if you would like to see if your car seat is affected), kits can be ordered directly here.   Recaro customer service can be reached at 1-866-628-4750 or by email at recarorecall@m-s-s.com.
