Bessemer police chase ends in crash early Sunday morning, two women dead

The incident happened at approximately 2:40 a.m. Sunday, when police made a traffic stop on a Honda at the intersection of 16th Street and 7th Avenue North. Sgt. Cortice Miles said after officers approached the vehicle, the car fled at a high rate of speed.

Police caught up to the Honda at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 19th Street North, as a Ford SUV crashed into the fleeing car.

Williams, who was a passenger in the back seat, was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:43 a.m. The second female passenger was taken to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:46 a.m.

Man charged with felony murder after fatal Bessemer crash that killed 2 women

38-year-old Courtland Dion Griffin of Birmingham has been charged with two counts of felony murder. Police say Griffin was the driver of the vehicle that fled.
