A man was struck and killed along Interstate 59 southbound Tuesday morning after he removed a ladder from the roadway, police said.

The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near the Oporto-Madrid Boulevard interchange.

A ladder fell from a truck. The man got out of his vehicle and went to retrieve the ladder for the other driver, a Birmingham Police Lt. said.

As he returned to his car, he was struck by a vehicle in the left lane. He landed in the middle lane where another vehicle struck him, police said.

Interstate 59 southbound was completely shut down for a period as authorities tended to the scene. Eventually, the left lane was reopened.

As of about 1:30 p.m., all lanes were open and traffic was flowing through the area.
