Birmingham motorist critical after being struck by man running from cops.
A motorist is in critical condition after his vehicle was hit by a man fleeing from police.
The crash happened about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday on Graymont Avenue. The name of the victim hasn't been released, but a Birmingham police spokesman said his injuries were life-threatening.
The police department's Crime Reduction Team spotted a vehicle driving without a tag and tried to make a traffic stop, Edwards said. The man - later identified as 27-year-old Troy McClure - drove about a block and acted like he was going to pull over for officers.
All of the sudden, he floored it. Police didn't pursue him, Edwards said.
Police said McClure then ran a stop sign and t-boned the motorist driving eastbound on Graymont Avenue. The 50-year-old victim was taken to the hospital.
McClure was taken into custody and remained jailed on Thursday. He faces multiple traffic charges including driving without a tag, driving without a license, driving without insurance, running a stop sign and possible charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The investigation is ongoing, Edwards said, and additional charges are possible.
