24-vehicle I-59 pileup a good wake-up call for safe driving, trooper says

Some drivers likely following too closely aggravated by "unconventional road conditions" -- rain and smoke -- are apparent major contributing factors, Daniel said, adding that information is preliminary.

On Monday afternoon on Interstate 59 northbound, 24 vehicles were involved in a pileup that closed the road for several hours. Of the vehicles involved 20 were passenger cars, 3 were tractor trailers, and 1 was a truck pulling an RV. 10 people were hospitalized after the incident, but no injuries were believed to be very severe. Witnesses say that a car fire on the side of the road blinded drivers, causing the accident.
