Two people killed after their single engine aircraft crashes in a remote area of Jefferson County, while trying to land at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
2 passengers killed in northern Jefferson County plane crash identified.
2 found dead at plane crash site.
Two people, later identified as Allan and Cali Campbell, are dead tonight after a plane crashed near Trussville overnight. The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was a Cessna 210.
They say the plane left from Jackson, Mississippi last night, and was trying to land at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
Because of weather conditions, the airport asked the plane to circle around. That's when airport officials say they lost contact with the plane. Search crews have been looking for the plane since then, and about 2:30 this afternoon, they were able to locate the plane.
Officials say the plane came down last night clipping trees on one hill, then hit more trees on another hill before diving into the ground. A search crew on-board a helicopter searching for the plane spotted a debris field and then alerted other officials on the ground to check it out. After going through rough terrain trying to get to the aircraft, searchers discovered the two dead bodies. While the plane has now been found, there's still a lot of investigating left to do.
"What we're going to do now is try to get a crew out here so that we can access the site a little bit better. We will have to have some ability to clear a path to get to and from the site," a Jefferson County Commissioner said.
The site is fully secured. The National Transportation Safety Board will take over the investigation but there's no word on when that team will arrive. The names of the two deceased haven't been released .
