3 Vestavia Hills High School students suffer electrical shock, 1 critically

Three Vestavia Hills High School students were injured this afternoon when they were moving a portable goal post and it struck a live wire, according to public safety radio transmission.

One of those students, Jack Graffeo, is listed in critical condition, according to a spokeswoman at Children's of Alabama.

Vestavia Hills police and fire, as well as representatives from Alabama Power, responded to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. The students on the lower practice field at the time were members of the schools track and field team.

"The three students received immediate medical attention from the school's athletic trainers and school resource officers,'' McGhee said. "One of the students went into cardiac arrest on the field. It is our understanding that the student was successfully resuscitated after receiving CPR and use of the defibrillator."

McGhee said first responders arrived on the scene within one minute, and paramedics arrived in less than 10 minutes. All three of the students – Graffeo, Grant Brown and Garrett Griffin – were taken to Children's of Alabama by ambulance. Graffeo was listed in critical condition Wednesday night. Children's officials said his condition is no longer available for public release, but friends say he is awake, communicative and improving.
