No plea deal in 2014 crash that killed a Chandler policeman

A man charged in a 2014 hit-and-run crash that killed a Chandler police officer has turned down a plea agreement. Maricopa County prosecutors say Brian Yazzie was offered a plea deal in court Friday. Police say Officer David Payne was rear-ended on his patrol motorcycle while stopped at a red light on Oct. 31, 2014. Yazzie's trial is scheduled to start Nov. 2 and he could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Court records show the 32-year-old Yazzie allegedly was under the influence when he crashed into Payne's motorcycle and fled the scene.
"Unfortunately, we had a DUI driver driving on a suspended license who rear-ended our officer and took his life last night," Favazzo said.
