A 14-year-old girl was reportedly on a wooden swing around 9:30 a.m. when adults inside heard the structure break.

Sanger said the wooden swing structure was part of a custom pool. It appeared to be rotting near its base, which was inserted into the concrete pool decking at the home near Higley and Queen Creek roads, Sanger said.
The accident occurred in the backyard of a home near Higley and Queen Creek roads around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Gilbert. Authorities say a 14-year-old girl was swinging on a large wooden rope swing near the corner of the pool deck when the swing broke, knocking the teen into the pool. As she fell, she accidentally knocked a 7-year-old girl into the pool with her. Both girls sustained serious head injuries. The younger girl was found at the bottom of the pool, and the homeowner, who is a doctor, attempted CPR to revive her, but she was pronunced dead. The teen was brought to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where she underwent surgery for head and shoulder injuries, but she is expected to survive.
