Phoenix police have identified the woman investigators believe fatally struck her boyfriend with her vehicle while he was walking along the road, officials said.

Brittney Nolan, 20, was booked into jail on counts of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision, said Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump.

Sometime between 2 and 7:30 a.m. Jan. 25, a 2010 black Nissan Sentra was driving south on 27th Drive near Westland Road, south of the Carefree Highway, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a pedestrian who is believed to have been walking in the southbound bike lane, left the road and drove into the landscaped area, Crump said. The Sentra did not stop to help the injured person and instead left the scene.

The pedestrian, identified as 20-year-old Jacob Rice, was found about 8:30 a.m. by a jogger, Crump said.

Investigators found the Sentra at a nearby apartment complex and determined it belonged to Nolan, who was Rice’s girlfriend, he said.

Nolan admitted that she was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision, but said she didn’t realize she had hit someone, Crump said. Though Nolan showed no signs of impairment when police talked to her hours after the incident, she told police she had drank alcohol during the night at a party in the desert.

She and Rice got into an argument on the way home from the party and he walked away from the vehicle, Crump said. While out looking for him, she told police she got on her cellphone at one point and lost control of her car, causing her to go off the road. She continued driving because she thought she hit a pole, he said.

The investigation is ongoing, and Nolan could face additional charges, Crump said.
