Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that happened just after midnight near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix.

The driver of a Nissan Sentra was traveling southbound on 43rd Avenue and had just driven through the Bell Road intersection when they realized they had missed their turn, according to a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department.

The Sentra’s driver attempted to make a U-turn and turned the car directly into the path of an oncoming Hyundai Santa Fe, resulting in a driver’s-side collision.

The Sentra’s driver was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said. The Sentra’s passengers and the Santa Fe’s driver were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Driver impairment did not appear to have played a role in the crash, police said.
