Man who died in collision with semi truck identified

Rubina Pina Herrara, 57, was riding his bike west on the north sidewalk of Buckeye Road near 24th Avenue about 4 p.m. when he swerved to avoid a light pole and lost control of his bike, Phoenix Police Department spokesman Officer James Holmes said. He fell into the road and hit the side of the semi-truck, which had been driving in the curb lane.

Phoenix police have identified the bicyclist who died Saturday after crashing into a semi-truck.

Rubina Pina Herrara, 57, was riding his bike west on the north sidewalk of Buckeye Road near 24th Avenue about 4 p.m. when he swerved to avoid a light pole and lost control of his bike, Phoenix Police Department spokesman Officer James Holmes said. He fell into the road and hit the side of the semi-truck, which had been driving in the curb lane.

Herrara suffered serious head trauma and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Holmes said.

The semi-truck driver remained on scene and was evaluated, he said. There were no signs of impairment, and he will not face charges.

Witnesses on the scene said this was the second accident to occur in that intersection this week.
