Pedestrian struck killed; car goes into canal to avoid scene

Officers continued to search for the car Monday morning.

A pedestrian in his 30s was hit by a white four-door sedan near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix at about 8:30 p.m. The sedan is likely to have severe front-end damage, and it was last seen southbound on 19th Avenue. Then, a man trying to avoid the accident scene's road closure on 19th Avenue tried to turn his car around, crashing into a nearby canal in the process. He was able to get out of the car and was not injured, but he was taken into custody to determine whether impairment may have been a factor.
