Santillan said the man suffered extensive trauma and "succumbed to his injuries."
A man in a wheelchair was crossing the street at or near the intersection when he was hit by a van near 34th Street and Thomas Road around 8 p.m. The Phoenix fire department responded to the crash and discovered the victim in severly critical condition, and he was pronounced dead of his injuries a short time later. Phoenix police say the roadway will likely be closed for several hours while Phoenix Police detectives investigate the accident. We'll update this sotry as more information becomes available.
