PHOENIX (AP) - Firefighters say one person is dead and another has been injured in a two-car crash in Phoenix. Fire officials say two cars crashed and then a fire started between the vehicles. KNXV-TV in Phoenix says the crash happened around noon Sunday near 31st Avenue and Southern. They say one person was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The area will likely be closed for a few hours as Phoenix police investigate.

One person was killed and another motorist was rushed to the hospital in critical condition following a fiery crash. The two-vehicle accident happened just after noon at 31st and Southern avenues. The impact of the vehicles colliding sparked a fire but it was quickly extinguished. Fire officials said the person who died was a man and the injured motorist was a woman but no names were provided. Southern Avenue is closed from 27th to 35th avenues.

Phoenix police said Eddie Ray Roper, 31, was seen driving a maroon Buick Lacrosse erratically going westbound on Southern Avenue. Witnesses saw the car weaving through lanes as well as crossing the center line driving toward oncoming traffic that was traveling eastbound.
