A wreck on Loop 202 in Tempe backed up westbound traffic for several miles during the Thursday morning rush hour.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to a three-vehicle wreck with minor injuries at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday near the Priest Drive overpass, according to a DPS spokesman.

A Pontiac had failed to slow for traffic congestion and rear-ended a Chrysler which in turn rear-ended a Jeep, said a DPS spokesman.

The driver that caused the chain reaction was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center with minor injuries, and was cited for failing to control a vehicle and avoid a collision, Garcia said.

The wreck caused traffic to back up from Priest Drive to Loop 101. Crews had all lanes back open by 8:30 a.m.
