One man killed, two other men critically injured, taken to hospital, after tractor-trailer strikes disabled SUV on I-10 in Pima County.

One person died and two people were seriously injured after a wreck involving a semi-truck struck and SUV on Interstate 10 near Marana early Tuesday morning, authorities said. A 39-year-old man was driving an SUV westbound at about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday when it swerved for an unknown reason and went into the center median, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The SUV then rolled over cables in the median and came to a stop in the eastbound lanes, according to DPS. A passenger had gotten out of the SUV to help the the other two people in the vehicle when the SUV was struck by a semi-truck, according to DPS. The force of the semitruck striking the SUV caused the vehicle to rotate and strike the passenger that was standing alongside the vehicle, according to DPS. The passenger survived with life-threatening injuries and firefighters had to use Jaws of Life to free another passenger from the SUV who had critical injuries, according to a spokesman with the Northwest Fire District. The SUV’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The two male passengers are in critical condition and were transported to the trauma center at the University of Arizona Medical Center, according to the Northwest Fire District. The semitruck driver was not injured, according to DPS. The wreck forced emergency crews to restrict one lane of eastbound traffic early Tuesday morning.
