A teen has died from his injuries after colliding with a tree on Sunday night, according to officials with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Several Northwest Fire District units worked for 18 minutes to free him from the vehicle, according to Capt. Adam Goldberg, a district spokesman.

18-year-old dies when car hits tree in Pima County
Mendez was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson with life-threatening injuries and died about 1 a.m. Sunday morning, the spokesman said.

Mario Mendez, 18, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree after attempting to pass a vehicle on the right on North Highway Drive in Pima County northwest of Tucson. Mendez was extracted from the vehicle and brought to University of Arizona Medical Center, where he died. The Pima County Sheriff's Department says speed was a factor in the crash.
