An 18-year-old woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident Friday evening in Pine Bluff.

Artisha Rainey was driving a 2005 Kia Spectra southbound on Hazel Street at a high rate of speed, according to two witnesses, when at about the 3500 block she apparently lost control of the car, started to fishtail and skidded onto the east side of the roadway, according to a Pine Bluff Police Department spokesman. The car left the roadway, crashed through a wooden fence and struck a tree.

Wegner later said in a press release that Rainey’s car passed another car at a high speed immediately before the crash.

First responders were dispatched to the scene at 8:25 p.m.

At the scene Friday, the car was still resting on its passenger side against the tree with its tail lights on. Onlookers were screaming and being restrained by police, who were taping off the entire block from 36th Avenue to 37th Avenue as the potential accident scene.

Rainey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Deputy Coroner at 8:58 p.m. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Rainey was a Pine Bluff High School student who in March won first place in an art contest in honor of National Crime Victims Rights Week, according to an article in The Commercial archives.
