The pilot of a small airplane that experienced engine failure and went down Saturday off the Southern California coast near Catalina Island said it never occurred to him that he wouldn't survive the crash.

The two plane passengers were rescued from the water from an unknown vessel. The Santa Catalina Express catamaran aided the rescue be relaying the distress call to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard responded with a boat and met up with the ship. Both plane occupants were taken to Catalina Island. No injuries were reported in the incident
