Joseph Awaida, Raihan Dakhil, and their son Omar, 3, killed in pedestrian collision at Country Club Drive and Los Cerritos Park Place in Long Beach, California

Investigators say the driver of the car, identified as 20-year-old Carlo Navarro, was driving southbound on Country Club Drive toward Los Cerritos Park Place when he turned onto the sidewalk instead of the road, striking Awaida, his wife and 3-year-old son.

Police determined that the driver of a 2002 Toyota Sequoia was heading southbound on Country Club Drive and failed to make a turn. Instead, he drove onto the sidewalk and hit the three pedestrians, who were walking from Los Cerritos Park Place, police said.

A GoFundMe page identified the young victim as Omar and said his parents were Raihan Dakhil and Joseph Awaida. A memorial was set up at the site of the crash Saturday, where family and friends gathered to mourn Omar and Awaida.

The driver of the SUV, 20-year-old Carlo Navarro, was detained at the scene and later booked on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter, authorities said. The Long Beach resident is out on bail after it was set at $100,000. 

Awaida was studying to complete a medical degree, the Islamic Center said, and Dakhil loved helping people and volunteering at local nonprofits.

A 20-year-old man was charged in the deaths of a 3-year-old boy and his parents who were fatally struck in an alleged DUI crash while trick-or-treating in Long Beach on Halloween.

Navarro — who is now being held without bail — is due back in a Long Beach courtroom Jan. 16. He faces 45 years to life in prison if convicted as charged in connection with the crash, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Amor Potestades Amacio, 56, allegedly sold alcohol to 20-year-old Carlo Navarro at Green Diamond Liquor, on Oct. 31, according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.
