“The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is conducting a death investigation to determine if this was an intentional act or if it was simply an error on the part of the driver who misunderstood the directions,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Cindy Bachman said.
Officials believe a wrong-way driver who died in a head-on crash on the northbound 15 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga may have been suicidal. The collision occurred shortly after 5:18 a.m., when the motorist, driving a Toyota Prius, entered the freeway south of Baseline Road driving in the wrong direction, hitting a semi-truck, which caught on fire. Witnesses to the accident indicated that the driver may have been suicidal. The Prius driver has not been identified, and the truck driver's condition is unknown.
